My Mexican Bola during Pregnancy from Blooming Lovely
Before this pregnancy, I had never heard of a Mexican Bola and wouldn't have been able to guess what it was, which is funny because I don't think I would be able to live without mine now!
So what is a Mexican Bola?
The Mexican Bola, also known as a 'harmony ball or 'angel caller', is a traditional chiming pendant steeped in hundreds of years of Mayan history. Worn by expectant mothers during pregnancy the chime pendant is worn low, resting against the bump so that any movement means baby hears the gentle ringing sounds. Isn't that beautiful?
Blooming Lovely Jewellery specialise in Mexican Bolas, all handcrafted and hallmarked in the UK. They are individually made in a variety of luxury designs from silver plated pendants to sterling silver and brushed sterling silver. To see the full collection, click here.
My two favourites are the special edition 'Mama to Bee' featured below, which is what I chose, and the 'Blossom Pendant' which is embellished with lovely delicate flowers in gold or rose gold.
The calming benefits for you and your baby
Each bola emits their own unique sound; imagine a tinkling chime on the wind. The baby is said to be able to hear this in the womb and find it calming, but this sound provides calming benefits for mothers-to be. The relaxing sound has helped me to remember to slow down and find the space in that moment for me and my baby, in a world that is so busy!
I mentioned previously that the Mexican Bola is also known as 'The Angel Caller,' because the subtle chiming sounds of the pendant are said to act as a reminder for our guardian angel to watch over us, and in a moment of need the chime can be gently shaken and our guardian angel will come to our side.
I can understand why, with this special sentiment and meaning how such jewels become traditions, engrained in our cultures and passed on through generations.
It's a luxury, but absolutely worth it
Do you need a Mexican Bola during pregnancy? No... But would I recommend one? Absolutely yes! It is a bit of a treat, a luxury or an ideal gift for someone who is pregnant and mine is now going to be treasured for a long time until I can pass it on to my daughter-in-law when she is expecting.
